Learn and explore: Tips for the cottage and the shore
Do your laundry in an environmentally friendly way
Wash yourself and do your laundry naturally and sustainably
- Use environmentally friendly detergents. Look for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel!
- Wash rugs and dishes at designated washing stations with proper drainage on land.
- If no such stations are available, let the washing and dishwater soak into the ground well away from the shoreline.
- Feel free to dive into natural waters for a swim, but don’t use any detergents.
why?
When you choose environmentally friendly detergents and properly absorb wastewater into the ground, no eutrophying nutrients, microplastics from hygiene products, or other harmful substances end up in the water.

Compost
- Compost food, garden, and toilet waste in a covered compost bin as far away from ditches and bodies of water as possible.
- Cover the compost container with a lid or tarpaulin.
why?
In a covered compost, nutrients don’t wash away with rainwater but are instead put to good use in the vegetable garden.
Wastewater to the right destination
- Find out which technical solution for wastewater treatment would work best at your cottage: On-site wastewater management.
why?
If wastewater is released untreated into nature, it causes eutrophication and pollution of water bodies—and eventually the Baltic Sea.
